Gold spider handbag

Lacloche Frères | C. 1920 | France | Gold, platinum, diamond, pearl

Lacloche Frères (the Lacloche brothers) were one of the most talented jewellers of their era. Their fantastic and exquisite pieces attracted numerous followers, including the Prince of Wales and the Prince of Monaco.

In Roman mythology, the brave weaver Arachne dared to challenge Minerva (the goddess of craftsmanship) as the best weaver, and was punished by being transformed into a spider weaving an endless web. The spider on the gold bag is made of diamonds, pearls and platinum - serving as a symbol of the artist persona - representing Arachne, who was punished for her creative ambition.
